The role
A highly specialised technology business developing intelligent camera systems used in security, enforcement and transport environments across the UK and overseas. Their products combine embedded hardware, computer vision, AI and software engineering into a single platform.
This isn't a large engineering department buried under layers of management. It's a small, capable R&D team where software, hardware and algorithm specialists work side by side, owning products from initial concept through to deployment in the field. If you like solving real engineering problems, seeing your code run on physical devices and having genuine influence over technical decisions, it fits.
Day to day you'd develop primarily in C++, supporting existing products while delivering new functionality across the platform. The work spans embedded Linux environments, build infrastructure and release workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and automated test coverage at multiple levels. You'd collaborate closely with hardware engineers and AI specialists.
This suits someone who can operate independently, take ownership of technical challenges, and contribute beyond writing code.
What we need to see
- Strong commercial experience developing software in C++ within Linux environments
- Around five years or more of hands-on software engineering
- Good working knowledge of Python for scripting, tooling, automation or API work
- Experience with embedded Linux distributions such as Yocto or Buildroot
- Solid understanding of CMake and modern build systems
- Exposure to CI/CD tooling, ideally Jenkins
- Good grasp of software architecture, testing practices and code quality
- Able to work autonomously on complex problems without constant direction
Useful, not essential
- Docker and containerised development environments
- Networking protocols and hardware-level interfaces
- API design and development, including GraphQL
- Python and C++ integration technologies such as pybind11
